Welcome to McLane Creek Nature Trail in Capitol State Forest! This family-friendly trail is perfect for a day of outdoor adventure. The trail is located in a beautiful forested area and runs alongside a creek, offering plenty of opportunities to observe local wildlife and enjoy the natural scenery.  Along the way, you will find interpretive signs that explain the local flora and fauna, making it a great educational experience for kids.

1.3 miles if you stay on the main loop, which is extended to 2.4 miles if you take the connector trail to the eastern loop.  There are some rolling hills if you extend your hike. Take breaks or picnic along the trail at one of the many lookout areas.

Keep an eye out for the wildlife that call the forest home, including birds, squirrels, and even the occasional deer. The creek is also great for spotting fish, newts, and other aquatic creatures.  The kids always have lots of success with our scavenger hunt activity map!

Pro Tips to go Further

 

  • This is one of our favorite trails to hike during the fall. Families can get up close to rivers as salmon migrate back home. Just remember to stay out of the creek beds during this time due to spawning.
