The Twin Barns Loop is a great family-friendly hike in the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge in Thurston County, Washington. This 1.2-mile trail takes you through a beautiful wetland area with many wildlife viewing opportunities.  This trail is along a boardwalk and gravel surfaces, so strollers are an option for families with non-walkers.  

The trailhead for the Twin Barns Loop is located near the visitor center in the wildlife refuge. You can park at the visitor center parking lot and follow the signs to the trailhead.  A national parks pass is required or a daily $3 fee can be paid on site. The Twin Barns Loop is a flat, easy trail suitable for all skill levels. There are interpretive signs along the way that provide information about the plants and animals that you may encounter.

The Nisqually Wildlife Refuge is home to various wildlife species, including bald eagles, great blue herons, river otters, beavers, and more. Watch for these animals as you hike the Twin Barns Loop so your kids can find all of the items on their Quest Trails Activity Map. The best time for wildlife viewing is early morning or evening.  Kids have plenty of opportunities to explore and learn about the natural world. Be sure to bring binoculars and a camera to capture the wildlife and scenery.
