Trail Details

My sea-creature fan son loves this trail. Depending on the tide, more than half the trail is mudflats or water, depending on the tide (starting around the 1.25-mile mark). The boardwalk will take you over McAllister Creek to witness all sorts of activity.

The Nisqually Estuary Trail winds through beautiful wetlands and offers stunning views of Mount Rainier in the distance. You’ll also have the opportunity to see a variety of wildlife, including various waterfowl and harbor seals!

Starting on the trail, you can take the gravel path or the boardwalk (Twin Barns Loop) toward the barns. Once you reach the 1-mile point, you will notice you are now exposed to the wind. Bring extra layers, hats, and gloves for you and the kids. It gets windy and cold, even in the summer.

 Happy trails!

Pro Tips

  • Junior Refuge Manager Program is available, though the Twin Barns Loop is a better fit for the booklet.
  • Get here early on a sunny day.  The parking lot fills up fast.
  • Ensure the little ones use the bathroom at the visitor center, or else they will need to use the port-a-potty near the barns (great picnic area).
  • Bring extra layers, hats, and gloves for you and the kids. It gets windy and cold, even in the summer.
  • Bring a set of binoculars!
  • Before you go, check WTA ‘s Trip Reports!
